EVERYONE WINS Your support of the 2008 QEII Home Lottery will help build an expanded, world-class Emergency Department and assist with the purchase of a CT Simulator to help treat cancer patients. The current QEII Emergency Department, the region’s busiest, is treating far more emergency cases each year than it was designed to handle. The QEII Foundation, in partnership with the Nova Scotia Department of Health, has committed to funding a greatly expanded Emergency and Trauma Department already under construction. A few of the benefits of this new expansion will include an increased number of assessment areas, improved patient privacy, and enhanced infection control standards. To meet its partnership funding commitment, the QEII Foundation still needs to raise in excess of $1 million to help complete the much needed expansion. A CT Simulator uses sophisticated technology and software to generate a three-dimensional representation of a patient’s anatomy. As part of radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer, a CT Simulator allows the Radiation Oncologist to not only identify the tumor but also the surrounding healthy tissue. This accurate analysis minimizes the potential damage to the healthy tissue during treatment. Using the CT Simulator offers the ability to customize each patient’s procedure to uniquely match their anatomy and their condition. This cutting-edge piece of equipment will improve efficiency and quality of radiation therapy, and will also reduce wait times since patients can undergo a full CT scan within minutes.
